Shoulder impingement Syndrome - Part 2
If you have ongoing shoulder pain elevating your arm, it is recommended to get it checked over by a specialist. If they have eliminated a direct injury to one of the tendons keeping the joint centered (Rotator Cuff), you can now start your retraining regimen.
First up, it has to be assessed how the shoulder and shoulder blade move against each other. This can be assessed by lifting arm(s) in different ways. Prior, marks on both of your shoulder blades edges ensure to pick up differences in these motions and would indicate a great starting point for exercise therapy.
Quite often it is already a relief for the patient giving them one easy should adduction exercise. The entire retraining process is far more complex though. The most common mistake to start shoulder rehab, is to start with M Deltoideus engagement too early!!
Bio-mechanically this muscle is inclined to cause more harm than good to improve the condition as its main motion lifting the arm is one thing BUT doing a partial dislocation!
Of utmost interest is the engagement of all the shoulder blade fixating muscles IE Rhomboids etc!!
This can be achieved with all sorts of arm/shoulder pulling exercises (Rowing , Pull Ups) or even better therapeutic rock climbing!
